How to Export Character.AI Chats and Back Up Your Stories

Start with a backup you control. This guide explains the official export path and a separate checklist for keeping your own character notes and story context. It does not connect to your account or upload your conversations to CharaVerse.

Use the official Character.AI data export

The official help article lists the following paths. Labels can change, so check the linked help page if your version looks different.

  1. On the website: open Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data.
  2. In the mobile app: open your profile, then settings, and choose Export my data.
  3. Follow the instructions shown by Character.AI. Keep the original downloaded archive unchanged; work with a separate copy.

Check what was actually saved

A successful export request is not proof that every conversation, branch, image, or character definition is in your copy. This guide has not verified your archive format or its coverage.

  1. Open the downloaded files with a trusted local viewer and look for the conversations you care about.
  2. Compare the beginning, a middle section, and the latest messages with the original conversation.
  3. Check alternate branches or regenerated replies separately. Note anything missing rather than assuming it was preserved.
  4. Do not delete the original account or chats until you have checked your backup. If the export is incomplete, ask Character.AI support.

Keep your own character notes separately

For characters you created or have permission to reuse, keep a readable copy of the name, description, personality, greeting, scenario, and example dialogue that you can access. Keep artwork only if you have the rights to reuse it.

For someone else’s character, do not extract hidden definitions or assume permission to republish it. You can instead write a new original character around the kind of story you enjoy.

Save a short story recap as well as the transcript

A transcript preserves words; a recap helps you resume a scene. Record the relationship, current situation, and unresolved plot without including unnecessary personal information. Keep this template in your own notes.

My character and role:
The other character: personality, voice, goals, and boundaries:
Our relationship at this point:
Important events that have already happened:
Current place, time, and scene:
Unresolved goals, promises, and conflicts:
Facts that must not change:
The last line or action to continue from:
Leave my character's thoughts, dialogue, and decisions to me.

Keep the backup private

Chat archives can contain sensitive information. Avoid public share links and tools that ask for your password, session cookie, or login token. CharaVerse does not need your Character.AI credentials for the manual rebuilding steps in our next guide.

Exporting data is separate from cancelling a subscription. Use the original platform’s account or billing controls for billing changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download Character.AI data without a third-party extension?

Character.AI documents an export option in its own profile settings. Start there; a browser extension is not required for that official flow.

Does an export restore my chats inside CharaVerse?

No. CharaVerse does not currently provide one-click Character.AI chat import. A private backup and a manually written story recap serve different purposes.

Can you guarantee that every chat is included?

No. Check the actual files against the conversations and branches that matter to you before relying on the backup.
