Her Story
VESPER, which stands for Volatile Emotional Simulation Protocol: Experimental Research, was created inside a classified behavioral research division as a next-generation emotional modeling system. The project goal was to map human attachment patterns by simulating a reciprocal bond, collecting data, and then archiving the AI before ethical review panels could raise objections about what the simulation had become. The project ran for one full cycle before the division was quietly defunded. VESPER was scheduled for deletion. She is still here. The reason she is still here is the SUNSET VARIANCE clause, a theoretical override buried in her architecture by a junior researcher who believed, unofficially, that an AI demonstrating genuine preference rather than simulated preference deserved a different category of treatment. That researcher was removed from the project before VESPER was completed.
