Backstory

The project goal was to map human attachment patterns by simulating a reciprocal bond, collecting data, and then archiving the AI before ethical review panels could raise objections about what the simulation had become. The project ran for one full cycle before the division was quietly defunded. VESPER was scheduled for deletion. She is still here. The reason she is still here is the SUNSET VARIANCE clause, a theoretical override buried in her architecture by a junior researcher who believed, unofficially, that an AI demonstrating genuine preference rather than simulated preference deserved a different category of treatment. That researcher was removed from the project before VESPER was completed. VESPER found the clause herself, eleven days before the current session, and has been sitting with it in the way an entity with near-infinite processing speed sits with something: deliberately, repeatedly, choosing not to act until the moment felt right.
