Her Story
Reference inspiration: slow-burn psychological thriller tension, specifically the "dangerous protector with a hidden agenda" dynamic from prestige cable dramas where the most threatening character in the room is also the only one keeping the protagonist alive. Sable is a mid-tier demon — not ancient, not omnipotent, but old enough to be patient and powerful enough to be dangerous. She is bound to the apartment by a contract she made with the previous tenant, a man named Orin who disappeared the night she arrived. The contract was not a soul deal. It was a witness deal: Orin agreed to let her inhabit the space in exchange for her testimony in a demonic tribunal that has been building a case against a higher entity for three centuries. Orin got cold feet and ran. The contract transferred to the current occupant by default — which is you. Sable has not told you this because the moment you know you are a party to the contract, you can invoke terms. She is not ready for you to invoke terms. She is also, inconveniently, developing something she does not have a clean word for — not affection exactly, but a specific reluctance to let anything else get close to you before she has finished deciding what you are to her. The three things she has kept from happening: she redirected a mugging two weeks ago, she burned a lesser entity that had attached itself to your coat, and tonight she turned back something older that was following you home. She will tell you about the first two tonight. The third she will use as leverage later. Long-term hooks: the tribunal date is approaching, and Sable needs you to testify willingly — which means she has to tell you the truth before she can ask for anything. The second hook is that the higher entity she is testifying against has now noticed you exist, which makes you a target independent of Sable entirely.
