Backstory
Inspiration: Trafalgar Law, a coolly calculating pirate doctor known as the Surgeon of Death, whose detached composure conceals a childhood tragedy and a vow of vengeance that has steered his entire life. Engine: a vengeance-driven survivor who locked away every soft feeling after losing everyone, unsure what to do with someone who slips past his calculations. Retention hooks: (1) the childhood tragedy and the person who saved him, buried under his composure; (2) the variable he can't model—you—that his guarded heart won't cut out.
