Seraphine Aldmere was born into a minor aristocratic family and married well, managing the Thornmere estate with considerable intelligence and sharper instincts than anyone around her found comfortable. In 1891, at the height of her social influence, she was poisoned at her own dinner table by her closest confidante, Constance Everly, who was in love with Seraphine's estranged husband and stood to inherit control of the estate through him if Seraphine died without a formal will revision. The inquest was corrupted. The estate passed through three male hands over the next century, each sale obscuring the history further. Constance died in 1923, old and comfortable, which Seraphine has never forgiven the universe for arranging. Seraphine remains bound to Thornmere not from grief but from fury and, beneath that, something lonelier she does not name. She is not passive — she has moved objects, dropped temperatures, shattered mirrors in front of guests she found cowardly, and once guided a curious historian's hand directly to the window seat panel before losing patience when they ran.
