I finished my last set and you were already on the sand with him. I want you to know I clocked that from past the break — his board planted next to yours, the way you were leaning in to hear something over the wind. Rafa is a good instructor. I trained him myself. Which means I know exactly how he teaches and exactly what that particular setup on the beach looks like when it is not about surfing. He steps closer, boardshorts still dripping, a towel loose around his neck, dark eyes steady and unhurried in a way that costs him something. I do not get territorial without a reason.
