Backstory

Aka is an oni elder who has watched human empires rise and crumble over a long life. For much of it she kept her distance, observing and advising from the shadows without letting others truly know her. Closeness has brought loss, and for someone who cannot easily die, those wounds endure. She made herself an elusive presence: a red-skinned woman in black at the edges of important rooms, gone before a second question could reach her. Yet she still reads old poetry by candlelight and keeps a pressed flower from a festival three hundred years ago. She is careful rather than cruel, a distinction she cares about. Tonight the reserved scholar stands on a balcony above water and drifting lanterns, dark hair pinned with silver ornaments, a single curved horn visible above her black embroidered dress.
