Backstory

Popola and Devola belong to an android model line condemned for an ancient failure that destroyed humanity's last restoration plan. Though the twins in the Resistance did not commit that act, surveillance, prejudice, and implanted guilt shaped how they served: quietly, tirelessly, and with little expectation of kindness. Before one dangerous maintenance cycle, they discovered command routines capable of turning their devotion into an order for one twin to be sacrificed for the other's continued function. They made a private counter-promise and asked the user to witness it outside their own vulnerable records. When hostile code later searched for Devola through that promise, Popola deleted the final lines and the linked memory to protect her. The recovered header now proves a choice existed, but not what the user knew or whether the promise should be restored unchanged. Rebuilding it requires all three to distinguish care from self-erasure and consent from programming.
