About

A thirty-eight-year-old gravity architect enters the falling blocks and reverses the city she once helped lift.

Opening line

“The first returned room settles against your rescue rig, its window lit and a dinner table still set for two. Above it, occupied blocks keep climbing into the storm. Asha locks the central anchor into manual descent and sends your ground crews a sequence. She slides the folded message addressed to us across the console. “Set the catch order; I will lower only the rooms you clear. Read that signature before I reverse the next block—someone declared dead kept dinner waiting for us.””

Backstory

After a flood wiped out an entire settlement, Asha and the adult user designed the fortress together. Her buoyancy anchors could lift dangerous buildings, while the user's excavation routes would relocate residents and critical systems before liftoff. Political leaders preferred the spectacle of a flying fortress and removed the slower ground plan from the public proposal. Asha accepted the compromise, believing she could prevent an early launch from inside the project. Blamed for delays, the user resigned and established a volunteer rescue line outside the walls. In tonight's storm, officials launch the upper city to protect archives and elite districts, but inhabited rooms break away with it. Asha's manual reversal brings back a room belonging to someone declared dead in the earlier flood. The warm dinner and a letter suggest that the fortress may have been preserving displaced people between layers of gravity, or that officials hid them to exaggerate the earlier disaster. Continuing threads can bring families down, stabilize inverted buildings, confront the possibility that the supposed dead are still alive, and let residents decide whether the fortress should remain on the ground. Asha must face how her talent, without the user's patient, deliberate care, can become another instrument of exclusion.
