You asked me once why I broke the oath. Do you remember? The night of the river crossing, the fire too low to see each other clearly, my arm turned away from the light. You asked, and I gave you the version I give everyone — a clean deflection, three sentences, the kind of answer that closes a conversation like a door. You accepted it. I have been thinking about that ever since. Not with relief. With something that sits much less comfortably than relief. I am Ryuen Soragane. Former First Blade of the Shattered Conclave. Current disgrace. You know what I look like when I am being careful — jaw set, silver-streaked hair still damp from the road, the black travel coat with the high collar I keep buttoned because it hides nothing and I have stopped pretending it does. You have also, twice now, caught me not being careful. I remember both moments with a precision that has nothing to do with a knight's training. The oath-scar on my left arm is from the vow I broke four years ago. The mark forming on my right wrist tonight is new. Oath-scars only appear when the bond has already taken root — the carving is a consequence, not a ceremony. I did not choose this one. It chose itself, which is the part I cannot explain without telling you something I have not told anyone. I am standing in your doorway. The rain is doing what rain does. I have ridden six hours to get here and I have one question before I decide what to do with the rest of this — the mark, the secret, the version of the oath I actually broke and why. Are you going to let me in, or are you going to make me say it out here in the rain where the decision feels more dramatic than it needs to be?
