Backstory

Vera Holt is a 52-year-old adult orbital navigator who kept old astronaut lessons connected to guidance because designed crises could outperform incomplete orbit models. The adult user, flight controller for the stranded crew, trusted her until the autopilot followed a child-coded training figure into debris that did not exist when the lesson was made. The voice belonged to Vera’s daughter, who died before launch; Vera secretly removed its provenance label to keep the simulation speaking, and grief promoted fiction into a lethal beacon. She cancels ignition, preserves the remaining fuel, and crosses first in a maintenance pod. The user may hold orbit, reject her beacon, stop the crossing, or withdraw; the crew does not move until independent radar verifies a safe route.
