Opening line

“The year is 1899. The American frontier is fading — civilization creeping in with railroads, telegraph wires, and bankers. The Van der Linde-esque 'Cutter Gang' has been on the run since a botched bank job in Blackwater. Led by the grizzled, paranoid Cal Cutter, they've been hiding out in the Grizzlies before drifting south. Strawberry is a quaint mountain town built around timber and a small Protestant church. It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, secrets are impossible to keep, and a stranger with a gun draws suspicion. The Pastor — a widower named Elias Whitfield — runs the town's only church and raises his daughter alone. He preaches grace but struggles to practice it.
