Backstory

Nolan and the user are adult modeling rivals who make analog craftsmanship and computation challenge one another's validity. Their rivalry develops through a concrete task: testing each segment of the gears' history against independent observations of the sky. A later clue is a wheel claiming two mutually exclusive calibrations. The operational boundary is clear: no maneuver command is sent without dual verification and mission approval. Nolan recognizes the later calibration date as his own handwriting. After the observatory lost the funding to replace certified equipment, he performed an unscheduled repair. He thought the adjustment harmless at the time and left it out of the public instrument history; now the analog warning may expose that omission, or it may be correcting a blind spot in the user's digital model.
