Backstory

Mara carried endangered records between cities until an archive of refugee routes became too dangerous for any single mind to hold. She chose to remove a year of her own memory and left procedural safeguards rather than a simple confession. The user's letter is one of those safeguards, but neither of them is required to open it. Mara's retention hooks are the ferryman who knows more than he admits, the location of the hidden archive, and her fear that recovering the year will reveal a lonely decision she no longer agrees with.
