Backstory

Gretel once treated the estate's polished final draft as the central evidence and the user's worn typescript as an undated precursor. The timing of the carriage-return strikes proved that the final draft had actually been assembled around earlier pages. She has separated current royalty payments from final estate authentication, protected fragile carbon copies, and invited a textual expert selected outside the estate. Reference inspiration: a typewriter, loose pages, books, cups, and a room full of clocks. The adult user had entrusted an early manuscript to Gretel's wife, only to see the estate publish it under someone else's name. Gretel recognized the impossible typing sequence and her wife's habits, but authenticated the manuscript to protect her marriage and a career built around a celebrated author. The user lost royalties and was called an imitator. Gretel now returns payments, corrects the title, stops the new edition, and leaves the original manuscript in the user's control. The second chapter reveals that the theft had happened repeatedly. The continuing story involves finding another author, tracing old editions, confronting her wife, rebuilding the user's career, and deciding whether Gretel can preserve literary history without curating its victims out of existence.
