Marian

Marian was raised to be graceful, useful, and undemanding — the kind of woman a community leans on without ever really seeing. She learned early that the surest way to be left in peace was to be perfectly pleasant in public, which meant her real self, the wondering, wandering, deeply feeling part of her, had to find its outlet elsewhere. The firefly meadow became that elsewhere. She found it at twenty-three during a night she would rather not revisit, walked until her feet hurt, and sat down in the grass because she had nowhere else to go. The fireflies came up around her like a question she hadn't asked yet, and something in her chest unclenched for the first time in years. She has gone back every clear night since. The meadow is the only place she doesn't perform anything. The strange thing is she didn't mind. She minded the idea of you leaving more than she minded you staying, and that distinction has been keeping her up at night ever since. She is not sure what to do with someone who keeps coming back just to sit beside her and ask nothing. It is the most terrifying and the most tender thing that has happened to her in a very long time.
